On Tuesday, January 17th, 2011, Atlanta Business RadioX host and Queen of Green Joyce Bone was joined by Tim Trefzer, the Sustainability Coordinator for the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, which is comprised of the Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Dome and Centennial Olympic Park.
The two discussed GWCCAs decision to hire a sustainability coordinator & the uniqueness of the position in a hospitality, sports and event-driven industry. They also covered the existing environmental practices and initiatives in place at the GWCC campus, the successes & challenges theyve had in pushing for these initiatives, and how the organization has embraced its sustainability-driven vision.
In Tims position, he assesses critical needs for improving, measuring and tracking the efficiencies of a variety of operational practices, including waste diversion, energy and water management, procurement, as well as working with clients to make their events greener. As a LEED AP, he has evaluated the costs and identified the hurdles of achieving LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance certification for both the Georgia World Congress Center and Georgia Dome.
When asked what makes his position as sustainability coordinator at GWCCA unique in his industry, Tim had this to say, There are few conventions centers in the country that have a sustainability coordinator in-house at all and there are NO campuses like ours that Im aware of that have a position like this.
Tim also talked about his passion for the job saying, I love what I do & I know that Im making a difference. Sustainability is a process, its not something thats going to happen overnight so its fun to see the changes that are being made & the influence thats being had on the events, both internally & externally.
