Rolling Meadows, IL (PRWEB) January 25, 2012

Though most medical residency programs don’t offer education for career transition, Adventures in Medicine an organization that advocates for physician work-life balance hopes to make it more accessible. Most recently, the organization launched an Online Career Tracker, which allows residents to track and organize each phase of their job search as they work to secure the right opportunity.

In 2010, Adventures in Medicine gained praise and recognition after publishing a 212-page guidebook offering expert insight into the business and personal sides of medicine. Though the guide is still published and delivered to over 20,000 residents annually, founder Todd Skertich continually seeks ways to increase active engagement with the resident community.

Adventures in Medicine’s Online Career Tracker launched earlier this January. Divided into six modules, including “Learn,” “Discover,” “Plan,” “Search and Interview,” “Evaluate and Decide” and “Transition,” the tool allows residents to divide their job search process into manageable steps. Each module contains detailed resources and educational links, and includes an area for residents to check off each step, record dates and take notes about their progress.

“We hope the Online Career Tracker will reduce residents’ anxiety and help them feel confident in their job search,” said Skertich. “In a way, the tool is like having a personal career coach right there beside you, helping to point you in the right direction. From CVs and physician cover letters to licensing and contract negotiation, graduating residents have a lot to keep track of and that’s in addition to their already demanding schedules.”

Though the Online Career Tracker is a new tool, it was built as a complement to the existing Online Resource Library, which houses worksheets, white papers, financial planning tools, industry links and more. Residents, fellows and educators can access both the Online Resource Library and Career Tracker by signing up for membership privileges through the Adventures in Medicine website.

“For a limited time, we’re offering complimentary access to all tools and information within the Online Resource Library and Career Tracker to those who sign up for free membership,” said Skertich. “By doing so, we hope to raise awareness among physicians and medical residency programs about the importance of education for the business side of medicine.

Yvonne Burnett, Physician Recruitment Manager at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Illinois, says career education and work-life balance are trending concerns among residents and new physicians. “Nearly all of the candidates I talk to tell me they don’t receive any training in their programs about how to navigate the physician job search process,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons we chose to sponsor Adventures in Medicine. Residents and fellows consistently tell us that the guidebook and educational tools are very helpful.”

Interested residents, fellows and educators can sign up for free membership to access the Online Career Tracker and Resource Library at http://www.adventuresinmedicine.net/members/member-benefits. After a brief questionnaire, new members are given a personal login and the ability to save information privately in the Online Career Tracker.

About: Adventures in Medicine aims to ease the transition from residency to practice by providing the resources physicians need to develop critical interpersonal and professional skills, realize their purpose and achieve a healthy work-life balance.
